Day 1

day1

On Monday, HLF volunteers, led by co-founder Therese Lundqvist, arrived in the Dominican Republic. By mid-afternoon the group was hard at work with community partner Together for Better at TFB’s Camino de Esperanza in Veron. This school is newly rebuilt and currently serves approximately 80 local students ages 3-9. Through a recent HLF grant, the lease for the land Camino de Esperanza sits on has been fully paid for two years. The day’s work included painting the walls surrounding the school, painting one side of the school itself and of course, some time for play!

Day 2

day 2

On the 2nd day of the HLF service trip, volunteers went shopping using funds donated by our generous supporters, to purchase school supplies for all three Together for Better schools, serving over 180 students, for the entire school year. Though it is complicated and takes many hours to make a large purchase like this, by shopping in the Dominican Republic, HLF saved on shipping costs and supported the local economy. These savings allowed HLF to buy additional supplies for a 4th TFB partner school and put more funding towards much needed cleaning supplies and services to make the classrooms a safe place to learn. Thanks to all who donated through our virtual school store to make today’s shopping trip such a tremendous success!!

Day 3

all

The 3rd day of the HLF service trip to the Dominican Republic was without question the busiest and most rewarding. HLF Co-Founder Therese Lundqvist and volunteers joined Together for Better Founder Ebba Lövenskiold at 4 TFB schools to deliver supplies, inaugurate a new school and spend time talking to and learning from community members, teachers & students. It was an emotional day where we witnessed great determination and joy, while gathering an understanding of the challenges that lie ahead and what we can do to tackle them.
